This day in Railroad History
June 23, 1839
Gustavus Franklin Swift was born. He founded the Swift & Co meat-packing empire in the Midwest during the late 19th century, over which he presided until his death. In 1878 Swift hired engineer Andrew Chase to design a ventilated railroad car that was well insulated, and positioned the ice in a compartment at the top of the car, allowing the chilled air to flow naturally downward. Initially, ice was harvested from ponds in the winter and stored, later, railroads adopted mechanical refrigeration in central plants to make ice, but contined ice each railcar. Similar ice-cooled refrigerator cars were used by railroads for more than 50 years, until replaced by cars with mechanical refrigeration units in the 1950s, but by then much of the traffic was moving to trucks.

Tonight's Photo - Please send photos to trainnews1@yahoo.com.

GN X 458A E with 474B and 474C heads a WB freight thru Spokane, WA.on March 21, 1965 Note the older GN livery and the newer, simplifed scheme on the F's and all of the WFIX reefers in the consist. My heart, if not my soul, lies in this era of railroading. If I'm not mistaken, this is the future site of the 1969 World's Fair. I don't believe anything in this scene exists today
