This has been an amusing thread. Didn't we have the same rant a few years ago after one of the Bend trips? As one poster said, helos pacing steam excursions are nothing new... I got a nice vertical shot (from the vestibule of our train) of a helo and our train on Tehachapi back in 1984... the photo draws a laugh every time I see it. An interesting juxtapostion of transportation alternatives, to say the least.
In 1981 when we "freeloaders" chased 4449 down to the CSRM "Railfair" we had a great set in Hooker Creek. Nothing could go wrong, but at the last minute, the Sacramento Channel 3 helo paced the train through our shot, spoiling it for us. Grant Flanders was with us, and he was livid (indeed, he pursured the matter with the station and the FAA afterwards, but of course got little satisfaction, and anyway, the damage had already been done). Flanders is a Viet Nam vet, so when the chopper came in and messed up our shot, I said: "Well, Flanders, now you know how the Viet Cong felt!" :-)
