I usually stay out of these types of arguments, but I feel the need to set some things straight.
First, Kudos to the cooler heads who see the reality of the situation. This is the way railfanning has been for years, and it is not going to change. Life itself is a gamble. You may, or may not get that video. You have no more right to photograph than the guy next to, or in front of, or above you.
Second, I have not seen anything written anywhere that says Smokebox is speaking as a representative of the ORHF, or the 4449. His comments are EXACTLY like the rest of the comments made here... PERSONAL OPINIONS! If you are entitled to make remarks, than so is he. He really doesn't mind that there are people that don't support the group, or the engine. But he believes, as I do, that when the efforts of these groups bring you mainline steam operations, those who do not help, in some fashion, are impolite to complain.
A lot of people put in a great deal of time and effort and money to bring these engines out, and it bothers me to hear people say they won't support them, because of whatever perceived offence, or insult they have taken. Without the ORHF, and the Friends of the 4449, and the Union Pacific, and the BNSF, and the passengers, there would have been no train, period. No steam... No pictures... Think on that for a while.
Oh, and Idiot, (may I call you Idiot?), Smokebox more than earned his ride on the train, as did EVERYONE who was on board. They either worked their butts off, or bought a ticket. Some even did both.
