WOW !!! I can't believe the guardrail Espee put up on the bridge after the Cantara spill !!! Talk about overkill - that thing could probably stop several locomotives !!! So they killed a few thousand fish & polluted the Sacramento river; it's not like it will ever happen again. Besides, what about all the other river crossings ??? Maybe they aren't all on a sharp curve, but aren't they dangerous as well ???
My understanding was the operating rules in affect at the time regarding locomotive T.E. & placement within the train were mostly to blame.
