This day in Railroad History
July 3, 1882
The 3ft guage East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad the "Tweetsie" ran its first train from Johnson City, Tennessee to the iron works at Cranberry. Over time, the Tweetsie connected to other narrow guage lines and rail service eventually extended to Boone, North Carolina in 1919. Flooding in the 1940s resulted in abandonment of the farther reaches, but the tracks between Johnson City and Elizabethson were standard-guaged and served the rayon plants there through 2002. Today, the ETR is a switchinig road in Johnson City down to a few customers.

This day in Railroad History
July 4, 1828
Charles Carroll, the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence and a director of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, laid the cornerstone of the Carrollton Viaduct. As he laid the first stone he said, "I consider this among the most important acts of my life, second only to my signing the Declaration of Independence." The 312 ft bridge over Gwynns Falls near Carroll Park in Baltimore, Maryland was the first stone masonry bridge built for railroad use in the US. The Carrollton Viaduct has provided continual service to the B&O Railroad and its modern corporate successor, CSX Transportation. The bridge is currently the world's oldest railroad bridge still in use, carrying loads far greater than originally envisioned.
