Last month, I attended a lecture titled "Otto Mears: Frontier Mensch, Transforming Colorado's Mountains." Based on what I heard at the lecture, I don't think Otto Mears would have taken your defeatist position. On the contrary, he would have found some scheme to make it all work out.
