Well, after I posted the initial question yesterday I answered one of my questions. The sale agreement to the IW included 476 miles of track, including the Idaho Northern branch (99 miles), the Payette Branch (29 miles), the New Meadows branch (84 miles), the Boise Cutoff (44 miles), the Homedale branch (33 miles), the Stoddard branch (17 miles), the Wilder branch (11 miles), and the Burns branch (157 miles). I've run into some other references to the effect that the State of Idaho had some real concerns about the viability of this package. At any rate, by January 1988 IW had purchased and brought to Boise five or six geeps and painted a few of them before the sale fell through. The Idaho Northern, Payette, and New Meadows branches went on to become the nucleous of the Idaho Northern & Pacific; UP subsequently abandoned the Homedale and Stoddard branches; I don't know what has become of the Wilder branch, though Google maps shows it intact; Wyoming/Colorado ended up with the Burns branch; and I believe UpP finally sold the Boise Cutoff to the new Boise Valley Railroad a few months ago.
