SN 712 wasn't really given away, it was traded to Portola. Part of the trade was getting SN 146, a GE 44-tonner.

I understood that SN 712 was just too heavy for the 70 pound rail on the SN (as was WP 917D), so trading it to Portola for another smaller SN locomotive made sense for both museums.
