Having LAUPT be a stud - end terminal was an issue going all the way back to the 1920's, when the design for a union station was first discussed. The use of push - pull equipment with cab cars on one end has largely eliminated the problem, as it takes no longer for the engineer to " switch ends " than it does to load / unload passengers. Double - ended high speed trainsets could be the answer for LAUPT.
