Trains vs. Trucks
I once wrote a technical paper on why third world countries should go for railroads instead of highways (energy and environmental reasons and so forth) but I never thought of this, i.e., as the economy develops too fast, as in China now, massive traffic jams. China certainly isn't third world but I can see this happening in other countries with insufficient road capacity for the number of trucks. I'll bet it is happening now, but 9-day traffic jams are a little much.
