In order for the WP to drop the California Zephyr in 1970, the ICC ordered service between SLC and Ogden run by the DRGW to connect with the City of San Francisco at Ogden. Remember, the CZ still operated between Chicago and Salt Lake City. The train was called "California Service",IIRC. I believe the consist in the begining was a coach and sleeper off the inbound Chicago train. After Amtrak took over, it was just a coach. Since the DRGW had a limited supply of F-9A units that they needed for their portion of the transcon haul, they leased a FP-7A from the SP. The locomotive handed over happened to be 6447.
