I grew up in the north end, roughly 30th and Orchard in the 1950's, 60's and early 70's. With a north wind, the smelter was HORRIBLE. Ever light a strike anywhere match, and have it fizzle, then get a whiff of the fumes? With a north wind, it was that bad outside. With an east wind, the pulp mill dominated, sort of rotten eggs and something else. Also, Alcoa had a distinctive odor. Fortunately, most of the year we got south winds and Vashon Island suffered, as did Browns and Dash point areas. If there was an inversion, no wind,....

There was a popular song titled "The Aroma of Tacoma".

Tacoma smells so much better now! Still, I'm glad I live in the fresh air of the Pacific Ocean, far from towns now!
