I think MCRR #25 (or other MCRR engine) being leased short term to the YW would have been very plausible. It isn't that far by rail between the lines, and they were both good SP customers. If YW needed to rent an engine in a hurry, wasn't the SP their only other real choice - but did SP have any "light" engines available in the area at that time?
As far as 0-6-0 #8 being "available" - was it stored serviceable or parked dead on flue time?
Even SPng #9 was supposed to be the backup for GE 50T #1, but still had to be hauled dead to Laws because its flue time had expired.
