What you said about SP steam is very true, however if they wanted to lease power from SP, it didn't necessarily have to be steam, they could have leased diesel power just as easy.
Additionally, the YW had purchased #100 in 1955, a 2-8-2 from Long Bell Lumber out of Tennant. However it was determined that the cost of repairing the locomotive was more than railroad wanted to spend. #100 headed south to the scrap yards of San Fransisco in November of 1955, and #18 arrived early in 1956 from the McCloud River Railroad.
