Boy, do those pictures bring back wonderful memories!
Thank you, Pilawt, for posting them.

My 3 favorite steam locomotives of all time were there:
2472, 4449, 844.
i got to be part of the crew for the 2472 briefly, and staffed
her as a display the rest of the time. That whole Railfair
was a lot of fun, and both the 2472 and the 4449 celebrated
even-numbered birthdays that year: the 2472 turned 70,
and the 4449 turned 50. I remember Mike Mangini
(Executive Director of the 2472 group, the Golden Gate RR Museum)
shaking hands with Doyle McCormack (Chief Engineer and CMO
of the 4449) across the front couplers of both locomotives.

I believe the Sierra Ry #3 celebrated her 100th birthday in 1991,
although there was no celebration at Railfair 91 that I know of,
but there was one in Jamestown that we saw, complete with a cake.

Getting all those locomotives there for Railfair 91 was quite an
achievement. I enjoyed all of them. (I think one of the British
locomotives came over in the belly of a 747 (her tall stack had
been removed)).

To me, celebrations like Railfair 91 are absolutely essential to
increase civic pride and bond together people who would
otherwise probably never even talk to each other. We need
many more happy celebrations like Railfairs 91 and 99. :)

Margaret
