Some who are not aware locomotives are leased (with a few remaining old exceptions of owned units) consider them "sold" when they are returned to the lessor. The ex-CNW dash-8's have mostly found a home on CN. EMD's have enjoyed a better/longer life span than GE products for several reasons (including better long term reliability--like the SD-40--and better rebuildability and better parts availability---GE generally doesn't sell parts to rebuilders like MPI and VMV.) and since the dash-9 and EVO lines have proven to be more reliable and less costly to operate then dash-8's, many roads are pruging their dash-8 fleets by returning them to their lessors. The economy is beginning to slow a bit, and the housing market is still in the toilet so cars are returning to storage. This past summer found many class one's evaluating their storage fleets and have been returning leased cars to their lessors and scrapping older versions of the rest. The Wall Street Journal recently published a piece about how they don't expect the economy to rebound much before 2015, railroads seeing such information are taking a close look at what cars they still have in storage and if the cars are new enough and useful enough to justify further storage costs. 70-ton 50-foot box cars (i.e. per diem) cars are going to make a quick trip to the scrapper fairly soon, as are most other 70-ton cars.
