OPB are you saying that advanced technology firms like to make grand claims in response to the RFP, but refuse to warranty those claims in the contract? Shocking! Yes, they do that, we've had the same problem with Highway ITS technology projects, too.
Much shorter site lines and shorter stopping distances allow us to be a lot "sloppier" with traffic signal visibility, and most signalized intersections will have multiple signal heads covering the intersection, providing redundancy.
Tonnage, grade, dynamic braking, and authorized speeds lengthen rail response distances required to control the train, and this requires more accurate detection of the indication at much greater distances. Old heads taught me where to find the signals hidden between the billboards along I-10 though Mons an Fingal, you could pick them out from the other background lights at night, because of that better and brighter color.
