I'm not sure if light rail signals have to meet the same criteria as those for "real" railroads, but BOB2's comment about the brightness and color makes sense for them too. The LR signals on Sacramento RT are a noticeably brighter and purer red than the nearby traffic signals. If they're LED, the color is much clearer than the slightly pinkish/magenta hue that red LED traffic signals sometimes have.
Interesting that the LR signals are not approach-lighted as they are on most railroads; they're on all the time even in the middle of the night when nothing's running. Either RT has cheap power and lots of signal maintainers to keep the bulbs replaced, or they must be LED.
