It's easier to figure out where you're going if you know where you've been. That's a lesson to take from a historical exhibit that opened Tuesday at Diridon Station in downtown San Jose.

Ken Middlebrook said he had fun curating "The Way to San Jose," writing about the artifacts, photographs and maps about the city's transportation past that fill the display cases.

It starts with the covered-wagon days and includes the early trolley systems and Alviso marina, going all the way to our current airport and light-rail system.

Be sure to check out the powder blue suitcase for a wig that looks like something out of "Mad Men." Travel sure has changed.

And while San Jose's new airport terminal is appropriate for cutting-edge art, this exhibit is a perfect match for the 1930s-era look of the Diridon train station lobby.

Former county Supervisor Rod Diridon was a driving force behind the project, which was funded by the Rotary Club of San Jose and put together by History San Jose and the California Railroad and Trolley Corp.
