Actually, it is common for senior management at Amtrak to be terminated whenever and however. Amtrak's VP terminated the Master Mechanic for the Western Region while on a visit to Oakland without notice. The board seems to cycle through Presidents fairly frequently. Without union protection, they are nothing more than a number to other Amtrak managers.

I've said it before, the number one hinderance to a healthy Amtrak is the majority of its managers. They waste more money, rescources and talent than you could possibly believe.
