Besides the the MRL trains listed in the other posts if you want to shoot trains along the MRL between Sandpoint and Missoula I'd recommend parking in Sandpoint or Missoula and waiting for trains to depart either location. I was able to follow 2 trains from Missoula during September and until the clouds took over obtained multiple shots of each at different places. The west end of the MRL has some pretty cool places that I rarely see photographs of.
