Actually, the "Spirit of '76" train ran in 1972.

The train toured the Santa Fe, Frisco and Seaboard Coast Line from Richmond, California to Richmond, Virginia between November 11, 1972 and December 3, 1972. The consist was made up of SCL U36B 1776, ATSF steam gnerator car 133, ATSF historical exhibit car 5005 and Frisco caboose 1776, all painted in a special scheme. Page 13 of the February 1973 issue of Trains had photos of the train at Barstow and at Albuquerque.
