The story I heard was that A. E. Perlman liked the color green. Before his arrival, the signals were painted just like the SP: silver (masts and cases) with flat black backgrounds. This would explain the dark green used on the locomotives, known in some circles as "Perlman green", as well as the NYC green on the boxcars etc. I also heard a story that it had to do with the MP-54s being painted green under PC.
