I used a Manfrotto pan head (don't recall the number, but it's a fairly cheap one) for those Steel Bridge pans. I once handheld a 300-mm pan shot at 1/4 second, but the IS helped, I got lucky, it was the only one of tens of shots that actually worked, and it still wasn't that great.
