I forgot... one other factor, that I had heard doomed Alco went all the back to 25 years before the went out of business.
During WWII, due to the war, the US Government restricted which companies could make which products.
EMD was allowed to build road diesels.
Alco and Baldwin were allowed to build yard diesles.
Supposedly, that three or four year lead that EMD took at the time was something that neither Baldwin nor Alco were ever able to catch up on.
