It is entirely possible an existing railroad would purchase a defunct HSR line in California, but I suspect that would be more railfan pipedream than reality. If BNSF or UP really wanted additional lines that bad, they would build them, if there was a business case to do so. The same would be true for purchasing a defunct HSR line. And I can assure you, they will not pay very much for it. You might not be able to spell stUPid without UP, but they are not that dumb (and can see the CA taxpayers coming).
