For those of you that remember it and for those of you that never saw it, here's the bridge we were standing on, a great trainwatching spot!
This is one of my favorite shots by ex NP engineer Tom (TC) Miller, who left me his photo collection. Taken in 1962, looking towards the moon yard, while switching the dock.
There was another special thing about this old truss bridge! By grabbing onto one of the metal diagonal tension members and shaking back and forth, you could find the bridge's resonant frequency. What this means is, it acted like a big, bass guitar! I could get the entire bridge shaking up and down about 2-3", felt like a major earthquake. Drivers didn't like it at all though.
The bridge made a 90 degree turn at the water end. There was a 4x4 or maybe 6x6 "curb", a walkway, and a 2x4 railing. I wonder how many cars nose dived off the end of that sharp corner?
