Some years ago a train derailed going through town (Kearney, NE) on the UP mainline and plowed into a plumbing supply warehouse several feet to the side of the ROW. What it did to that building has been vividly in my mind ever since. And every now and then derailments occur in other nearby locations on that mainline, and the resulting messes are more dramatic reminders of what can happen when the massive kinetic energy of rolling stock goes astray. That's why I never pull my car up near the tracks at a crossing when a train is passing (or coming) but remain a good distance away. If other cars are behind me, I pull over, if possible, and let them pass if they wish. Yes, chances of derailments are very low, but I still don't want to take a chance.
