Weird way to think about engines

How much does a new 4400 HP locomotive cost? 2 or 3 million dollars? Call it $2,200,000, just to make for an even result. That works out to $500 per HP.

So the weird thought is: How much does a horse cost? My guess would be, more than $500. So a railroad locomotive can be thought of as a volume discount on purchasing horsepower.
