The problem is the 3751 is in the wrong place, Southern California, where freight rail traffic is or nearly is the heaviest in nation. From Alburqueque east there is no problem as there are multiple options that won't cause a problem. The key problem area is the LA to Alburqueque and there is NO route out of LA that isn't a problem. Assuming that UP would assist with any movement (not very likely), a trip up the Coast Line, then east over the Overland Route, the Rio Grande to Denver, and south to Pueblo would be the next best thing, but I don't know about the traffic conditions in the Salt Lake City area, the Denver-Pueblo Joint Line and of course the 3751 thru all the tunnels on the Rio Grande could be a huge problem.
While I do wish to see the 3751 fly across the former Santa Fe again, I can understand the BNSF position as this single movement (at 55 MPH more than likely) and the associated mob of railfans/specators creates significant headaches for the BNSF. At least they pulled the plug very early before its cancellation could cause too many bad feelings.
