Went out to check out the Woods RR this past Friday. The train left the mill about 8:15 am and made it to Rocky Point about 3 hours later. Ahead of it by about 1 hour was the waste train. the lumber train carried 30 loads which included 6 hog fuel, 23 lumber and 1 tank car, plus a caboose.
Access to the St. Helens tree farm area, which is most of the area north of the tunnel that the railroad traverses, is gated and motor vehicle access is prohibited. The Toutle River was still running fast and a little high, there was no attempt to wade across for the bridge shot but there are some good shots between the bridge and the Green Mtn. Mill.
I have heard that the mill won't close until the new one is built in Longview. That hasn't even started yet, so get your pictures this year while you can! No logs are currently being hauled as this was discontinued around 15 years ago.
It appears the operating pattern is pretty much the same as it has been for at least the past 10 years from what I could observe.
The Columbia and Cowlitz Rocky Point interchange track is all rusty and becoming weed grown, so it is definitely not used any more.
