Reno is a nice place--lived there for 4 years and closely associated for a few more. Still have friends there. It just suffers from a weierd mentality at the local political level. Those are the people who are sure that they are just one step away from "turning the City on" to become Las Vegas North. Whether it be some attempt at locating destination complexes outside of the downtown hub (MJM Grand/Ballys), tearing down a classic old casino/resort, or getting those dang railroad tracks out of the most crowded part of downtown. It also suffered horribly from "Californication" in the 90s when people were fleeing CA taxation and regulation--which overloaded infrastructure--which lessened the dollars needed to fund the Destination Reno desire of the local political elites. The problem is that Vegas went big-time, family destination fun while Reno continued to appeal to the country music, eldery, and Bay Area Asian audiences. By then, it was too late. Plus, it is too close to Tahoe--which the nor-Cal yuppie crowd ends up heading to for vacations by making a right turn at Truckee after going over the hill. Vegas put millions ($$) into their airport and the airlines followed with numerous non-stops. Reno rams bond issues and sales-and-room tax issues through to finance their big plans. Then, it falls short. This time (for people who didn't read the article), it was digging a big hole (trench) to put the RR into and then having tax money not keep up to pay the bonds off.
