I don't know what DIC means, but conclude DIT is "dead in tow"? The first three locomotives had visible plumes of exhaust when they throttled up just outside of Winnemucca, NV. A DASH-8, an SD40-2 and an SD60 (or SD50) were the first three locomotives, and all three were working. The rest seemed to be shut down, although some might have been idle for the trip. As the parade of modern and semi-modern power passed, I do recall some neutral engine noises, but I'm not too sure if more than a few were really idle; I was slack-jawed from the moment I saw what was coming down the tracks...
