DD-40'S ON THE WP

While I wasn't a full blown foamer at the time, I remember when UP took over the WP, I spent many days and nights in the Stockton yard. I do know that WP only had 4 axle power, whe the UP took over I remember seeing the 8 axle units run by my job in Livermore. Could someone please elaborate more on these obviously very different operating philosophies. Thanks
