The writing was on the wall. The Fox Theater on Market Street was to meet the wrecker's ball. This magnificent theater from the gilded age was built in 1929 and destroyed in 1963. Muni car 1 was built in 1912 and, fortunately, there was enough foresight to keep her around. Like so many historic buildings, the short sightedness of the public in general demand that progress means destruction. If Westminster Abbey were in the United States it probably would have been replaced by an all glass skyscraper. It's a shame that more respect isn't shown to our architectural treasures.
