Senator Claghorn (E. V. Smith) once told me that JJ Jordan used to pat the bumpers at 3rd & Townsend, saying "There's your paycheck, boys", but then again, he wasn't known as Senator Claghorn for no reason. In one mishap, a long time ago, a train was shoved over the bumper, across the concourse, and the car's coupler knocked a hole in the wall of Rickey's restaurant. I know one of them (the bumpers) was knocked off its moorings sometime in the early 1960s and then hastily put back, with some litter and dirt sprinkled around the base so you couldn't see it was loose. (The current depot is at 4th & Townsend).
