Just a couple of minor comments to add to the discussion above: my experience on the ATSF in the early 60's, when we still had firemen on diesels, was that having the fireman run the engine was very, very common. Happened all the time. Also, regarding an old guy working in the yard, it was not uncommon for "old heads" with a lot of senority to favor working yard jobs because it was an eight-hour day (sometimes less, if an early quit could be managed) and they could hold a day job and be home every night. Not everyone wanted to be out of town on road assignments.
