Some railroaders prefer to work the yard. I have a friend who, after being involved in a fatal grade crossing accident, chose to work 3rd trick Yardley for the rest of his career.

Granite lake was between Sandpoint and Athol. The NCL was #25, westbound so the train hadn't gone by Athol yet. Athol was a 24x7 train order station when I hired out in 1960. It likely stayed that way until the CTC was installed about 1964.

Slightly off this topic, but related --- have any of you read the fine article in the April 2010 "Railfan & Railroad" magazine by Martin Burwash titled "When You Want to Forget"? Martin talks about the Coroner's Inquest into the March 1, 1910 snowslide disaster at Wellington WA on the GN. William Harrington was the Trainmaster in charge who survived and had to testify at this inquest.
I am also happy to plug Martin's book "VIS Major", about the Wellington disaster and written from the perspective of the railroaders working there. This book is an outstanding read; you won't be able to put it down.
I know of at least one NP official who would relate strongly to William Harrington!
