A couple of comments:
The fact the Smithsonian relinquished ownership of it speaks volumes. It is no treasure.

MAR has enough problems raising long overdue funds for its relocation. Now it's taking on another restoration project which will divert funds and frankly will lose its relevance in 10 years or so when folks wonder, "What's the big deal about this diesel?"
