Let's also remember that Es and Fs would be very expensive to fabricate these days... the car bodies consisted of a metal "skin" applied to a supporting framework of structural members. "Hood unit" style carbodies are a lot cheaper to build (not to mention easier to maintain). The GE P42 "Moncoque" (sp?) style WOULD look better with a more rounded nose, I think, but where's the financial incentive to do it this way?
Also, E-units are too long... modern units need only one power plant, whereas the Es had two Wintons... I remember talking with a young UP engineer in Sparks after he handled the Es on an officers' special for the first time. He was surprised at all the room inside the car body, and wanted to know if they'd once used the space for lockers, or what? When I explained that the units as built had two power plants, he expressed surprise... he hadn't known that... :-)
