Yes, I've noticed this in rail enthusiast magazines, particularly in Railfan & Railroad.
One of my pet peeves is misuse of apostrophes such as, “There were three Alco’s on that train.” The correct form is “There were three Alcos on the train.”

The apostrophe is used as follows: “The Alcos’ smoke was visible for a mile” or “The Alco’s horn made a sweet sound.”
