Large railroads of the timesuch as SP and BN had a lot of their locomotives marked for maintenance facility or region that was primarily responsible for the locomotive. It was also used to keep certain units in certain areas for specific jobs/operations. Most GP35's were "Tucson" and used mostly on the various branches in the area. "San Antonio" and "Houston" were mostly four axle units and switchers especially GE's. "Pine Bluff" was almost always Cotton Belt units. "Los Angeles" was mostly SD40T-2s, SD9Es and switchers. "Bay Area" was everything from switchers to tunnel motors due to the wide variety of operations in the area.
"Roseville" was Mostly SD/GP9Es, switchers for all the locals and yard jobs and lots of 6 axle power for Donner trains. "Eugene" was pretty much SD/GP9Es for the branches and main line trains. I think that's it off the top of my head.
