Oregon Pacific has used radio controlled crossing signals (in addition to the normal train-operated circuits) for years.
The hyrail goes to the switching channel and touch-tones the code for the crossing and the crossing activates. Another code deactivaztes the crossing once the hyrail is through the crossing. A timer circuit automatically deactivates the crossing after three minutes in case of failure of the hyrail to deactivate. The signal maintainer with a hand-held uses the feature to check the lights and operation from a distance which makes monthly inspections much easier and safer.
