Here's how I imagine this story will end. And I imagine the story of the diabetic dude in Williams Jct. will end the same way.

(1.) The diabetic dude from Williams and the father of the teenage punk thieves in the Kingman incident will both file lawsuits against Amtrak, probably for millions of dollars, if for no other reason than for the news media to sit up and take notice. After all, at this stage of the game, these people need publicity probably more than anything else.

(2.) Amtrak will weigh the pros and cons of either fighting the lawsuits in court or negotiating out-of-court settlements.

(3.) Amtrak, like almost all of corporate America, will recognize that, in both instances, they have rock solid, slam-dunk cases, but will conclude that it's easier and, in the long run, cheaper to arrive at some sort of out-of-court settlement. This keeps the courts happy. Judges like sparcely scheduled dockets because it gives them more time on the golf course. Civil trials are becoming an endangered specie as out-of-court settlements and binding arbitration are becoming more and more popular.

(4.) The plaintiffs in these cases will walk away with nice, fat checks in the thousands of dollars. Not in the millions like they originally asked for, but, believe me, they'll be happy enough with the thousands. Especially the dude involved in the Williams Jct. incident. Judging from the picture I saw of him, he looked a step or two away from being homeless and on skid row. The father of the Taos teens will be happy, as the settlement check will more than cover the expenses he incurred driving to Kingman to pick up his juvenile delinquents. He and his bratty, undisciplined kids will be able to take a nice vacation to Hawaii or Europe -- on Amtrak's dime. And that really translates as YOURS and MY dime.

Whoever said "crime does not pay" simply didn't know how to manipulate our legal system.

Is it any wonder why lawyers are held in such low esteem ?? ....
