LA Times story: Staged train wrecks, early 1900's

I just happened to be taking OCTA home from work early this afternoon and picked up several sections of the LA Dog Trainer, er the The Los Angeles Times, to find several interesting stories. One happened to be a column written by Steve Harvey, "L.A. Then and Now, For spectators, a train wreck of an event". It made me think of when, as a kid, I would watch the cartoon show "George of the Jungle" where, in they opening, the showed two steam locomotives colliding.
