An article some time ago in Info, the UP employee magazine Mike Uden said the reason the UP bought the SD 70 was that it was a 4000HP equivalent of the SD40, had the same control stand, gauges, not the new CRT displays etc,no further crew training was required for the new locos as the cab layout and equipment was the same as the SD40, and could use 3 SD70 instead of 4 SD40's.
