How does a unit get a horsepower de-rating?
I know that most of UP's SD-38 switchers were SD-40's, and had the turbocharger removed. Essentially, the only difference between the two models horsepower-wise is the turbocharger. Is this the only way to lower the horsepower?
The SD-45 models have been reconfigured to a lower horsepower in many cases. Are they all "neutered" the same way? What gets done to the prime mover to de-rate it, is it only de-turbocharged or is the locomotive just re-engined with a 16-645? I'm sure there's more ways to skin a cat, but this is an interesting subject!
