The key to getting a photo to show up within an AP post is to use the "Insert Image URL" button. Note this is different from the "Insert URL" button. The "Insert Image URL" icon looks like a sun peeking over two mountains (to me, at least). After clicking the button, paste in the image URL.

Note that the image URL is usually not the same as the page URL. You can generally get the image URL by right clicking on the image itself at the site where it is hosted, then "Copy Image URL" in the resulting popup box. (Disclaimer: not all browsers work identically, but a similar procedure should work for most browsers.)
