Railroads are more eco-friendly than trucks especially in the long haul. That some environmental activists do not grasp this is unfortunate but not unexpected. Single issue groups tend to lose sight of the wider issue.
When I was in college the school wanted to cut down some trees on campus (No, I did not go to a UC). Well, the students objected and a meeting was held. A state certified aborist attended as did the head of our Dept of Botany. Both pointed out that trees, as living things, have a life span. The life of these trees was 75-80 years and they were already over 100. In addition they were infested with beetles. That was enough for most of us but a few die hard types wanted to save the trees. They were in someone's garage painting some signs when the workers showed up with chainsaws and the whole thing was over in 20 mins.
I've been back to the campus and the new trees look great. You just have to take in the whole issue.
