A while back we had what turned out to be an excellent thread started by "Trucker Bob" and as part of the thread, truck damage to roads was mentioned. This long span type of interstate bridge is a type of bridge most damaged by the wear and tear of trucks, and the most damaged by overweight trucks. The long span makes it possible for several trucks, in this case many trucks, to be present on the span at the same time. Given the number of trucks that are clogging our interstates these days, imagine how many trucks could find themselves on the 8-lane span at the same time, imagine also how many of those trucks are over the 80,000 GVW limit either legally or illegally, and imagine how often since 1967 this has occured. It's a wonder the bridge lasted as long as it did. Several weeks ago, I was on vacation taking photos of trains, and I had several occasions to be on hiway overpasses to grab photos and more than once felt the impact of multiple trucks passing over the bridges at hiway speeds and lost shots due to the significant motion of the bridge span. One span the sidewalk was an indepentent span (oddly enough, maybe added as an afterthought) and the motion of the railing on the automotive span when trucks passed over, was several inches compared to the pedestrian span's identical railing---and this was a cement bridge, wonder how long the cement will stand up to that flexing? Keep paying your taxes folks, there are going to be a whole lot of interstate bridges needing replacing in the coming years.
